JOAQUINA DE ANGOLA

“Memory of a Liberation”
Audiovisual installation created by Aída Bueno Sarduy
14 January – 16 December CCCB
Space design

Joaquina de Angola is an installation by the creator Aída Bueno Sarduy produced by Ibirifilmes and the CCCB, which recovers the story of Joaquina, a young woman enslaved in a plantation in Brazil, and her escape. A work about the voices archived, forgotten and silenced by the history of slavery and colonialism.

The intervention in the space that the public must travel through recreates the feeling of fear, anguish and finally hope of Joaquina’s escape using the shadow as a generating element.

With two very simple elements, lattice armor and black ribbons arranged more or less spaced apart and a very careful lighting, the entire space is flooded with shadows, highlighting special elements, such as the newspaper in which its owner announced that Joaquina had escaped, the discovery from which everything started.

A sound and olfactory panorama accompanies you on the way, creating a complete experience.
